Jason Byrne trusts HRBR for a discreet FUT hair transplant

We’re delighted to announce that well-known comedian Jason Byrne recently visited Hair Restoration Blackrock (HRBR) for a hair transplant, choosing our advanced FUT (“strip”) procedure for his treatment.

Why HRBR and why FUT

At HRBR we specialise in both major hair restoration techniques: Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Excision (FUE). Our team, led by Dr. Maurice Collins and supported by surgeons, doctors, nurses, and highly trained technicians, brings decades of surgical and hair restoration experience to ensure the very best outcomes.

In Jason’s case, FUT was the most appropriate choice. FUT involves harvesting a thin strip of hair-bearing skin from the donor area, which is then dissected under a microscope to yield individual follicular-unit grafts that can be transplanted to thinning or balding areas. Jason had a total of over 2,800 hair grafts transplanted which was a total of over 6,800 hairs.

Crucially, because FUT harvests a strip rather than individual follicles across a wide area, there was no need to shave Jason’s head; only the small “strip” area at the back and sides of the scalp was trimmed. The rest of his hair remained intact, allowing for a discreet recovery.

This approach aligns with HRBR’s commitment to providing a highly individualised treatment plan. After an initial private consultation with the doctor, with medical history review, scalp & hair assessment, and donor-area evaluation, every patient receives a bespoke treatment plan tailored to their hair-loss pattern, donor availability and aesthetic goals.

What patients can expect at HRBR

  • A discreet, confidential consultation with qualified doctors (not salespeople), ensuring honest, medically-driven advice.
  • A full pre-operative health check, scalp assessment and hair transplant design, with careful planning of graft numbers and placement.
  • On the day of surgery: a private car transfer to the clinic, a private waiting room and treatment room, local anaesthetic, and a dedicated team of surgeons, nurses and technicians ensuring patient comfort and optimal graft handling.
  • Use of stereomicroscopic dissection for graft preparation, ensuring highest graft survival and a natural result.
  • Post-operative support: follow-up appointments included in the transplant package (for up to 18 months), direct access to your surgeon, and a post-op care kit.

Jason’s Day of Surgery

Jason’s treatment day began early, when he was collected from his home by Gerry, HRBR’s patient driver, and brought directly to the clinic. On arrival, he was welcomed by the team and shown to his private room for the day, where he changed into surgical scrubs and settled in.

Before surgery, the medical team met with Jason to outline the plan for the day and to design his personalised hair transplant. This stage takes time and is one of the most important parts of the process, careful planning and hairline design are essential to achieving natural, lifelong results.

Planning Jason Byrne surgery

Once the design was agreed, Jason was brought to theatre. After receiving medication and local anaesthetic to ensure he was comfortable and entirely pain-free, the donor strip was gently removed from the back of his scalp. From there, Jason moved to our planting room, where he relaxed with television and music while the team prepared his recipient area and placed the microscopic follicular-unit grafts with precision.

Midway through the day Jason took a short break to enjoy a hearty lunch provided by HRBR, before treatment continued. His procedure was completed by late afternoon, and Gerry returned to take him home at around 5pm, with Jason beginning the first evening of his spray-and-care routine to support optimal healing.

Post-operative care

Jason will return to HRBR the day after his procedure and again approximately one week later for initial follow-up checks. He will then see his doctor at 6 months and 18 months to monitor growth and final results, an important part of the comprehensive aftercare that HRBR prides itself on.

He left the clinic with no bandages, no visible bleeding, and was able to resume washing his hair after just three days.

Why Jason’s decision matters

By choosing HRBR and opting for FUT, without shaving his head, Jason benefits from a discreet, effective and professionally managed procedure. As with all HRBR patients, his treatment is handled by a top-tier medical team with world-class credentials, using techniques designed to deliver natural, long-lasting results.

At HRBR, we recognise that every patient’s needs are unique. Whether you are concerned about early thinning, receding hairline, or more advanced hair loss, our expert team will guide you through all available options and recommend the approach most likely to deliver a natural, lasting outcome.

If you’re considering a hair transplant, as Jason did, you can start with a private, confidential consultation with our experienced doctors. We look forward to supporting you on your journey to restored confidence and natural-looking hair.
