Louis Walsh last night admitted having a £30,000 hair transplant.

The Irish judge revealed he had the op after taunts by show boss Simon Cowell.

As Louis, 59, was preparing to join fellow judges including Kelly Rowland for the X Factor final, he said: “Simon came up to me and said, ‘You know, you’re starting to lose your hair, dear’. I said, ‘I am not, dear. And anyway, you’re going grey’.”

But Cowell persisted: “Darling, you are. You’re losing your hair.”

Louis, 59, finally decided to contact Dublin hair specialist Dr Maurice Collins.

The op, performed in August, involved taking hair from the back of his head and implanting it in spots where it was thinning.

Louis said: “It’s called maintenance. It’s not a wig or a syrup of figs or an Irish jig. It’s just me with my own hair, feeling better.

“It’s like going to the doctor and getting something done to your heart before it goes.”

But fans will not notice the results immediately.

Louis explained: “It takes about a year to fully come through.”

He said he decided to go public after a string of stars – including Wayne Rooney, James Nesbitt and Jason Gardiner – talked openly about having the treatment.
